I am currently pursuing a PhD in anthropology with an emphasis on historic archaeology at the University of South Carolina. I am interested in plantation society material culture and foodways, particularly in the state of South Carolina during the 18th and 19th centuries. My dissertation project compares pre- and post-emancipation diet, cuisine, and ceramic use at Stono/Dill Plantation on the Stono River in coastal South Carolina. My aim is to identify how emancipation impacted the daily lived experience of people directly affected by it.
I recently received a Master's degree at the University of South Carolina. My thesis project was a comparison of ceramic diversity between the Lowcountry (coastal region) and Backcountry (interior region) of 18th and 19th century South Carolina plantation sites. My findings indicated that in contrast to urban-centric expectations, rural peoples were just as cosmopolitan as their neighbors along the Atlantic seaboard in terms of access to and preferences regarding material culture.
I also hold Bachelor's degrees in anthropology and psychology from the University of Florida and have spent the past decade working and volunteering as an archaeologist in Florida, South Carolina, and throughout the Southeastern United States.
